Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is one of the most commonly encountered hospital-acquired infections in ICUs. Despite advances in diagnostic and management strategies, VAP is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Studies have shown that VAP has an attributable mortality of 35% & it also predisposes to develop multidrug-resistant infections, increase in antibiotics usage by 40% & Length of ICU stay by 4-7 days. All this adds to overall cost of care for patients especially in India where 86% patients pay out of pocket for health care services.
