Quality Council of India (QCI) was set up jointly by the Government of India and the Indian Industry represented by the three premier industry associations i.e. Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), to establish and operate national accreditation structure and promote quality through National Quality Campaign. The Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, is the nodal ministry for QCI.
Accreditation facilitates international trade by way of establishing equivalence and global acceptance of certification, inspection and testing being undertaken by various conformity assessment bodies, in areas of quality, environment, food safety etc.

 

The National Accreditation Board for Certification Bodies grants accreditation to Certification Bodies & Inspection Bodies as per the Board's criteria in line with international standards and guidelines.

It represents the interests of the Indian industry at international forums through membership and active participation with the objective of becoming a signatory to multilateral and mutually recognition agreements with other countries.

NABCB isoperating accreditation schemes for Certification bodies for Quality Management Systems as per ISO 9000, Environment Management Systems ISO 14000, and Food Safety Management Systems as per ISO 22000, Product Certification Bodies (PCBs), and Inspection Bodies (IBs) based on applicable international standards.

The third party conformity assessment infrastructure offered through accreditation is finding growing acceptance in world trade through its use in regulation. The same trend is being witnessed in India with regulators increasingly seeking accreditation as a means of checking compliance to regulations through third party bodies.

This Board is entrusted with the task of carrying out National Quality Campaign with the mission; ‘Quality for National Well Being’. The Campaign aims to spread awareness on the importance of achieving global benchmarks of quality in products and services. The emphasis of the campaign is to enable suppliers to understand and apply quality standard and best practices and also to empower consumer to demand quality. The aim is achieved through a number of activities which includes:

  • Conduct of awareness programs / seminars
  • Holding national and regional level quality conclaves
  • Conduct of surveys/studies
  • Publishing newsletter, books, periodicals, etc
  • Campaign through print media
programs to create quality culture in Indian organization.
 

The Board offers registration services for Personnel, Education and Training Courses in line with international requirements. With the growing needs of competent personnel and credible training courses in various industry sectors, NABET has been rapidly expanding its scope of services to cater to the needs of the industry. NABET has established mechanism for accreditation of vocational training organizations and for personnel certification bodies based on ISO 17024.

NABET is the first organization in the world to offer registration of consultant and consultant organizations in various conformity assessment areas, Hospital Accreditation etc. Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) Consultant registration has been developed which is being used by Ministry of Environment and Forest.

NABET has recently launched accreditation programme for Quality School Governance in the Country, with a view to provide framework for the effective management and delivery of the holistic education programme aimed at overall development of students.

 

National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH) is set up to establish and operate accreditation programme for healthcare organizations. The board is structured to cater to much desired needs of the consumers and to set benchmarks for progress of health industry. The board while being supported by all stakeholders including industry, consumers, government, has full functional autonomy in its operation.

NABH, at present is operating following accreditation programs

  • Hospital accreditation
  • Small Health Care Organizations (SHCO)/ Nursing Homes
  • Blood Bank and Transfusion Services
  • Community Health Centre and Primary Health Centre
